Diaries of William Rees of Tonn, Llandovery. Cardiff City Library
In 1856, Edmund Buckley of Ardwick in Manchester, bought the Manor of Dinas Mawddwy in Merionethshire. His intention was probably to create a country home for his illegitimate son, Edmund Peck, who was also to inherit his businesses in Manchester, a large house at Ardwick and an estate called Grotton Head at Saddleworth in Yorkshire. Edmund Peck initially became the agent for the Welsh estate.

The manor house at Dinas Mawddwy, called Plas Dinas, was small and old fashioned. Edmund Peck intended to rebuild the house, but in the mean time, he rented a house called Bryn at nearby Llanymawddwy from the Trustees of Mr Tamberlain. There he became acquainted with the Rector, the Rev. John Williams, the author and antiquary, better known as Ab Ithel. One of the Rev. John Williams's regular guests at the Rectory was the printer and publisher, William Rees of Tonn, Llandovery. William Rees's daughter, Sarah, married Edmund Peck in March 1860, and William Rees's diaries record a growing interest in his son-in law's business, social and political affairs.
